Description

Pomerado has supported the Pembertion's mission in Africa for over 27 years.

We were very pleased that Leanna was here visiting with us on April 20, 2008. She updated us on the continuing work at Mashoko with the work at the orphanage and the overall mission in Zimbabwe. You can listen to her remarks here.

And for some of the photos she shared, check the updates section here.

In September 1956, John and Marge Pemberton set foot on Zimbabwe soil with their three children Sherman, Pamela and John Mark. Neither Bob, the youngest, nor the world wide web were a glimmer on the horizon. September 2006 marked 50 years the Pembertons and many others have been making a difference in that country.

John Mark met Mac Wright, the Minister of the new Pomerado Christina Church, when the church was fairly new. Evan Foote would soon join the Ministry Team as the Associate Minister. The Church did not have a Missions program yet and Mac Wright invited John Mark and Leanna Pemberton to come tell about the work in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) - they met with small groups from the Church and everyone was excited to begin this new work with the Pembertons. Pomerado Christian Church became their living link church to pay their expenses and they were our first Mission.

The work in Zimbabwe was begun 50 years ago by John Mark's Dad. It involves Schools, Churches, a Hospital and Clinics and in 2001 - the Orphanage work began and everywhere was an opportunity to tell the good news of Jesus Christ. John Mark and Leanna went to Zimbabwe to be Missionaries just three weeks after they were married.

Through the years, the Pembertons and Footes became close friends. The Footes kept the Pembertons picture on their refrigerator to remind them to pray for them every day. Both Kera Pemberton and Cara Foote played together as small children when John Mark and Leanna would come back to Pomerado to tell about their work.

Mission

Mashoko/Hippo Valley Christian Mission exists because Jesus said: "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19,20)

“I have the sad duty to report that my good friend and fellow minister of the Gospel, John Mark Pemberton, veteran missionary to Zimbabwe, died suddenly during a return flight from a speaking engagement Monday, November 21st, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Leanna, with whom he served for 27 years in southern Africa, establishing churches, schools, and children's homes. He is also survived by his three children: Kera, Krista, and Kollette Pemberton and granddaughter, Sian.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 26, at the First Church of Christ, 287 Pomeroy Street, Grayson, KY, at 2 PM. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, November 25, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM and Saturday, November 26, 12:00 to 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to The Chiredzi Christian Children’s Home. Contributions may be sent to the following address:

Chiredzi Christian Children’s Home, 132 W. Main St., Grayson, KY 41143.”

Yesterday, Pomerado's longest serving missionary, John Mark Pemberton, passed from this life to heaven. Please pray for Leanna and the whole Pemberton family.

John Mark was flying from Oregon to Cincinnati returning to his mission headquarters in Grayson, Kentucky. John Mark had just made a presentation to a church in Oregon that is planning to build a new building in Zimbabwe for the mission. Upon landing at the airport in Cincinnati, everyone got up out of their seats except John Mark. During the flight, without anyone realizing it, he died--apparently of a heart attack. It must have been a peaceful passing.

I talked to Leanna this morning. She is shocked and grieving, of course. All three of her girls, and her granddaughter are there too. (In fact, the granddaughter had just had her tonsils out at the hospital--another thing we could also pray for.) They have a very good support system because of their church right there with them in Grayson.

At this point we have far more questions than answers. Perhaps in the days to come some more answers will be available, but I knew you would want to begin interceding for the Pembertons and the Hippo Valley Mission in Zimbabwe.

--Evan
